The tag of citric flavoured cannabis genetics falls into the fruity varieties group.
The citric component in cannabis aromas is produced by the terpene known as limonene. This terpene is already present in ancestral cannabis strains, especially in landrace plants from South America and Asia. It is a fragrance reminiscent of lemon and comes from the famous Haze family.
Over the years, breeding and selection work has led to the evolution of the citric flavour traits in cannabis, further intensifying the aroma with an infinite number of nuances. We can currently find different lines with lemon and orange (another limonene isomer) in all its variants. In addition, we also find lime, tangerine, clementine and grapefruit among others.
Lemon citric terpenes in cannabis plants are present in a multitude of strains, from old Haze lines to Old School hybrids such as Jack Herer and Super Silver Haze among others. Also, in more modern varieties like Lemon Skunk and Lemon Tree (US genetics).
The plants that gave rise to the citric orange and tangerine aromas were Dutch strains like Orange Bud or NYCD (tangerine), and nowadays Tangie.
