Genetics: Slurmint IX x Ice Cream Cake

Slush Mint Cake comes from the cross between a Slurmint IX mother selected through pheno-hunting and the well-known Ice Cream Cake. Slurmint IX is, in turn, a combination of Slurricane and Platinum Kush Mints, two genetics that contribute floral density, resin production, and that sweet, cake-like character so associated with the current Californian scene. The sources consulted do not detail an exact indica/sativa ratio, but agree in describing it as a hybrid with clear indica dominance.

From the Slurmint branch comes the fruity and acidic base, with menthol touches and that candy note that gives the variety its name, in addition to a notable capacity to stack flower. Ice Cream Cake contributes the creamy and milky part of the profile, along with extremely compact buds and a trichome coverage that leaves the flowers almost white. The result is a very terpene-rich plant, with values that sources place between 2% and 3%, a high figure within the current commercial catalog.

In terms of structure, it behaves like an indica with some stretch: thick branches, large leaves, and long petioles that separate the vegetation and favor internal ventilation. During flowering it develops buds so dense and heavy that, in the final weeks, it's advisable to give them support with nets or yo-yos. The variety was awarded first place in the Mostly Indica category at the Highlife Cup 2025, an endorsement of the homogeneity achieved in the selection.

In cultivation: vigorous and XL production

Indoors, Slush Mint Cake stays in a height range of 100-140 cm, with an average flowering of 8-9 weeks (about 56-63 days). Some phenotypes may require an extra week if conditions are not optimal, approaching 9-10 weeks. The yields cited by the seed bank and its distributors are between 500 and 650 g/m², figures that are achieved with well-equipped rooms and powerful lighting.

Its moderate stretch and branching make it a natural candidate for SCROG, although it also responds well to LST, HST, and topping. When you manage to fill the screen, that's when the variety shows its full harvest potential. Moderate defoliation is recommended during growth and stopping it from the third week of flowering onward. The ideal temperature indoors is around 20-25°C; it tolerates lower values of 16-22°C, but that can extend the cycle.

The tricky point is humidity. Due to the compactness of its flowers, the risk of rot is relatively high, so it's advisable to maintain relative humidity around 40-50% in mid and late flowering, with good air renewal and, if necessary, a dehumidifier. Its resistance to fungi and pests is described as medium-high, but the density of the buds takes precedence over that data.

Outdoors it reaches between 150 and 200 cm and is harvested in early October in the northern hemisphere. Here the requirement is clear: dry, sunny, and warm climates, where it tolerates temperatures of 30-35°C without problem and can yield up to 1 kg per plant. In colder and more humid northern areas it's not advisable to plant it in open fields; in those cases, a pot with the possibility of shelter or a well-ventilated greenhouse are the reasonable option. The flower quality obtained outdoors or under plastic is barely distinguishable from indoor.

It's not a particularly forgiving plant. Its difficulty is considered medium-high, more due to humidity management and flower weight than nutritional demands. For a grower with a few cycles under their belt it's very rewarding; for someone just starting out, there are more predictable options in the catalog.

Flavor and effect: ice cream, sweet candy, and Californian gas

The aromatic profile is the great selling point of this variety. In full flowering it gives off a penetrating smell that combines sweet candy, creamy ice cream, and acidic fruit, with a gas background and menthol and berry nuances. It's a loud plant in terms of smell, so the carbon filter is not optional. The dominant terpenes described in the sources include limonene, linalool, caryophyllene, myrcene, humulene, and pinene.

In vapor or joint the smoke is smooth for its potency, with a creamy sweetness that lingers in the mouth and an acidic, gassy aftertaste that appears on the exhale. That contrast between the milky and citrus-acidic is what differentiates it from other genetics in the Cake family.

The effect kicks in quickly, with a euphoric and mentally stimulating high, and settles into a deep body relaxation without reaching total couch-lock if dosed sensibly. It's an evening-night variety, for unwinding, and its duration is long. Due to its resin load and a BHO return cited at 15-25%, it's also interesting for extractions. It's worth remembering that we're talking about an average THC of 23-27%, with higher peaks in specific tests: it's not a genetic for low tolerances.
